Sam Neill says the Marvel Cinematic Universe is still ‘a complete mystery’ to him – even after filming a cameo for the upcoming Thor movie

Sam Neill has revealed he had no idea what he was doing when he filmed his second cameo for the Thor franchise in Sydney earlier this year.

The actor, 74, admitted on Friday he doesn’t have a clue what’s going on in the Marvel Cinematic Universe because he hasn’t set aside time to watch the films.

He told News.com.au: ‘The whole Marvel universe is a complete mystery to me.’

‘You need to devote weeks of your life with that. It’s a lifetime devotion,’ he added.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe comprises more than 20 films, starting with Iron Man in 2008 all the way to the soon-to-be released Spider Man: No Way Home.

Sam’s first brief appearance in the franchise was as an Asgardian performer playing Thor’s father, Odin, in Thor: Ragnarok in 2017, alongside Luke Hemsworth and Matt Damon.

He reprised this role in Thor: Love and Thunder, in scenes filmed in March.

This isn’t the first time Sam has confessed he doesn’t understand the Marvel films or Thor’s place within the franchise – despite having a minor role in two movies.

He told Australian radio station Nova in June: ‘I’ve never understood any of the Thor films. In fact the whole Marvel universe is a complete mystery to me.

‘I mean I was standing beside Jenny Morris [on the set of Thor: Ragnarok] and I said, “Do you know what planet we’re on?” To be honest, I was completely baffled.

‘I came back and I was baffled again, I did my bit, I don’t know who is playing who exactly because they are sort of swapping roles.’

Sam’s new project is a starring role in Foxtel original series The Twelve, a courtroom drama based on Belgian series De Twaalf which is due to air next year.
