A fitness coach has offered her ‘low calorie, macro-friendly’ take on a McDonald’s Filet-O-Fish burger using budget buys from Aldi.

Bec Hardgrave, from Brisbane, shared a TikTok video showing how she made the classic burger at home using store-bought items including a brioche bun, a lightly battered fish, a slice of cheese and tartar sauce.

Her version contains 348 calories while the fast food chain’s burger has 380 calories.

What sets them apart even further is the 25-year-old’s homemade creation is a healthier option because it’s high in protein and it’s macro friendly.

Bec’s Filet-O-Fish-inspired burger costs just $1.96 to make while McDonald’s charges $5.45 per bun, saving a total of $3.47.

What you’ll need to make a Filet-O-Fish

1 Aldi brioche bun: $2.49 for a pack of four ($0.62 each)

1 Birds Eye lightly battered fish: $10 for a pack of 10 ($1 each)

1 slice Dairylea light cheese: $5.50 for a pack of 24 ($0.22 each)

10g Praise tartar sauce: $3 ($0.12 per 10g)

Cost to make one burger: $1.96

‘The bigger, better McDonald’s Filet-O-Fish. These burgers are less than 350 calories and it’s cheaper [to make],’ she said.

‘I feel like it’s so underrated because it’s actually so delicious but I’ll let you guys make the decision for yourselves. I’m loving it.

‘If you haven’t tried the McDonald’s Filet-o-Fish… I recommend trying this one.’

The secret to the McDonald’s-inspired creation is Aldi’s brioche buns, which taste ‘literally like McDonald’s’.

To make the burger, she simply baked a battered fish until golden.

In the meantime, she toasted the bun in a pan over a stove.

To assemble, she layered the bottom bun with a slice of cheese, followed by the fish. She squeezed tartar sauce on the top bun and then placed it on top of her fish.

She said her burger contains 16.9 grams of protein, 15 grams of fat and 36 grams of carbs.

Many said they couldn’t wait to recreate the burger at home, with one saying: ‘This looks actually so good.’

‘I love Filet-O-Fish burger – I also like to add lettuce tomato and onion to the burger as well,’ another said.

While one added: ‘Looks better than Macca’s! Can’t wait to try it.’
